Kedah poverty more important than airport issue - PKR leader

There are numerous poverty-related challenges in Kedah that need attention rather than the issues raised by the state PAS women’s wing, said PKR leader Siti Aishah Shaik Ismail.

The PKR central leadership council member was countering a recent statement from the Kedah PAS women wing’s information chief Mardhiyyah Johari.

Mardhiyyah called Anwar a failed prime minister for allegedly refusing to meet Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to discuss issues such as the leasing of Penang land and the construction of the Kulim International Airport.

In a rebuttal, Siti Aishah (above) reminded Mardhiyyah that the prime minister has consistently demonstrated a commitment to economic development and the welfare of the people in Kedah.

She cited the prime minister’s visits to the state, where Anwar announced incentives and initiatives designed to benefit the locals.

“Her (Mardhiyyah’s) statement attempts to create the perception that with the absence of meetings (between Anwar and Sanusi), the people of Kedah will be oppressed and the state’s development will be hindered…

“There is still much development from the aspect of poverty alleviation that needs to be focused on,” Siti Aishah said in a statement today.

The former senator also encouraged Mardhiyyah to be courageous and criticise Sanusi’s performance as menteri besar.

“The Kedah menteri besar should return to the norms of a leader, starting with attitude and manners.

“If he truly wishes to speak about the people sincerely, then he should improve his attitude instead of constantly spreading malicious perceptions and slander against the prime minister and the federal government,” she added.

Raising the amicable relations between the prime minister and other state leaders from opposing political parties, Siti Aishah emphasised the need for self-reflection.

She also advised Mardhiyyah to “not throw stones and blame others without acknowledging the shortcomings of our own leaders.” - Mkini
