No need for DAP to apologise to Umno - Zahid

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed calls for its new coalition government ally DAP to apologise for allegedly spewing accusations towards his party.

This comes after newly-elected Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called on DAP to issue a public apology to the Malay nationalist party over condemnations made when the parties were foes.

Zahid (above) said the matter had been resolved during the negotiations for the establishment of the federal government and should not be raised again.

“They have stated this matter several times. In fact, during the negotiations to form the central government, matters (pertaining to race and religion) became the main condition for us, and they agreed 100 percent.

“There is no need for us to repeat what they agreed to,” he told reporters at the party wings’ general assembly today at the Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

DAP has previously repeatedly agreed to recognise the position of Islam as the official religion as well as the rights and privileges of the Malays and Malay rulers.

Earlier, in his policy speech, Akmal questioned why DAP can’t apologise to Umno if the party could fly to Sarawak and apologise to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

“We want them to apologise... that would at least soothe the hearts of Umno members,” he said.

Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, urged Umno members not to be influenced by those who wish to topple the coalition government.

“We have the principle that this collaboration is between BN and Pakatan Harapan. Therefore, the desire is to form a government.

“The fact is this togetherness between BN and Harapan has been formed with increasing compatibility,” he said.

Zahid added that the leadership has certain techniques to explain the BN-Harapan cooperation to the grassroots.

“The town hall session conducted by the information chief has explained this matter. It should not arise again,” he said. - Mkini
