Perikatan Nasional will not announce its candidate for the Selangor menteri besar position ahead of the state election, said party sources.
While PN already has its choice should they wrest Selangor from Pakatan Harapan, a source said, the coalition will not name a 'poster boy' as the Selangor sultan will have the final say on who will become the next menteri besar.
The party insider, who holds a position in the Bersatu supreme council, told Malaysiakini that PN leader Azmin Ali has confirmed the matter.
There have been speculations that Azmin, who once led the state as menteri besar, would be PN's choice for the position should the coalition win the state polls.
"The matter (candidate for MB) has never been discussed at the supreme council level, so I cannot confirm who is to be the MB, whether it will be Azmin or a fresh face.
"Even Azmin has said that the sultan will make his choice from a list of candidates presented by the party that wins the election.
"So, I cannot predict who the sultan might choose," said the source who wants to remain anonymous.
Two days ago, PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said the party had decided not to reveal their candidate for the position.
He said the list of names will only be unveiled when the right time comes.
"We do not need to announce it.
"We have identified many leaders and when the time comes... then you will know who will be the menteri besar," he told a press conference after launching the PN Youth machinery in Shah Alam.
However, Muhyiddin had called for Azmin to lead the party to victory in Selangor.
The high hopes that Muhyiddin and several other PN leaders have placed on Azmin had created speculations that the former Gombak MP might be proposed for the menteri besar post again.
Another Bersatu senior leader told Malaysiakini that PN needed Azmin's experience in Selangor to win the state.
"We already have candidates for menteri besar, but what is important now is for us to win the state polls first.
"We are confident that the palace will accept the candidate," the leader said when asked whether Azmin was PN's choice.
Focus on winning 33 seats
Meanwhile, Selangor PAS information chief Nushi Mahfodz said PN is focusing its efforts on winning at least 33 seats in the Selangor election.
Each party in the coalition will also present its candidate for menteri besar for the ruler to choose, he added.
"We focus on winning the election first, with a target of 33 state seats to realise the people's wish to see a new Selangor.
"When we win the state, InsyaAllah each PN component party will propose their menteri besar candidate.
"And we will leave it to the sultan's wisdom to choose the best for Selangor," he told Malaysiakini. - Mkini
