Want to be a YB? Muda opens public applications

 

Following its announcement that it would be contesting solo in the upcoming elections in six states, Muda has opened applications to the public to apply to be a candidate. 

Muda president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said that the party was looking for potential candidates from all walks of life to be the “people’s candidate”.

He said that it was time to do away with the typical process of electing top party leaders to become candidates in elections.

“Muda is democratising the process by putting forward the people’s candidate. 

“We intend to use a new strategy by looking for fresh talents, even if they aren’t Muda’s members,” he said during a press conference at Muda’s headquarters in Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya today. 

Last year, PKR also introduced a website to allow ordinary Malaysians to nominate themselves as a candidate in the 15th general election (GE15).

In GE15, Muda fielded six candidates from the party, of which three were from its top leadership: Syed Saddiq, Lim Wei Jiet, and Siti Rahayu Baharin.

Meanwhile, Muda election director Luqman Long said that the party intended to field at least 50 percent of female candidates in the state elections.

Party leaders did not divulge how many seats it would contest but said that it would be announced in the near future. 

Muda also intends to go on tour to all six states to find potential candidates for the elections.

Dropped from govt

Muda’s decision to contest solo in the upcoming elections has received brickbats, with some accusing the youth party of breaking its electoral pact with Harapan.

Asked if Muda would be dropped from the unity government, Syed Saddiq said he was not the right person to respond to the question.

“You should ask the leaders of the unity government, nor have we been informed of the decisions of the unity government council.

“Muda is very focused, when we enter the state elections we present ourselves as the people’s alternative, to be the check and balance at a state level and also at a federal level.

“When reforms move at a snail’s pace or backtracked, there is a unique opportunity to present a wake-up call to the federal government through the voices of the people via the state elections that they have to buck up, change, accelerate the reforms, and ensure that the people will never be taken lightly again. That is our hope for the state elections,” he said.

On a separate matter, Syed Saddiq urged for election candidates from all political divides to declare their assets.

He also questioned why ministers in the current cabinet have not declared their assets despite being seven months in power. - Mkini
