The Foreign Ministry is identifying 134 Malaysians rescued from a cyber scam syndicate in Manila, the Philippines, recently.
"The Malaysian High Commission in Manila confirmed that local authorities had conducted a raid on a company called Xinchuang Network Technology Inc and rescued victims of the syndicate, including Malaysians.
"The Malaysian victims will undergo an investigation process before they are documented and deported back home soon," Wisma Putra said in a statement today.
Earlier today, Associated Press reported that the Philippine police, backed by commandos, raided seven buildings in Las Pinas City in Manila on Tuesday night.
They rescued 2,714 workers from foreign countries who were tricked into working for fraudulent gaming sites and other cybercrime groups.
Those rescued include 604 Chinese, 183 Vietnamese, 137 Indonesians, 134 Malaysians, 81 Thais, and 1,534 Filipinos.
Also rescued were victims from Myanmar, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Nigeria, and Taiwan, reported the news agency.
According to authorities, the workers were lured with high salary offers and ideal working conditions in Facebook advertisements, only to find out the promises later were a ruse.
The rescued workers told police that those who tried to quit the syndicates were forced to pay a hefty amount in the form of a "fine", or they would be sold to other syndicates. - Mkini
