Syed Saddiq tells 'Dear Tun' to stop divisive politics

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, a former Dr Mahathir Mohamad loyalist, has now called on the 98-year-old politician to stop dividing the nation.

“Dear Tun, the old politics of division must stop,” tweeted the Muda president this evening.

Syed Saddiq was responding to Mahathir’s latest salvo against the non-Malays, whom he accused without furnishing evidence, of wanting to “change the ownership and name” of Malaysia.

He told the former prime minister that Malaysians, regardless of race and religion, love this nation.

“They want to see Malaysia grow to become a developed country. Good jobs, good public transportation, good governance.

“I know absolutely no non-Malay today who wants to change our country’s name. I know many who call Malaysia their one and only home,” he added.

Syed Saddiq and Mahathir parted ways after the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in 2020.

The former chose to set up the multiracial party Muda instead of joining the nonagenarian’s Malay-based Pejuang.

‘Racist nonsense’

Muda co-founder and lawyer Lim Wei Jiet was more blunt than Syed Saddiq in his response to Mahathir’s remarks.

“What a load of racist nonsense from Dr M once again,” he tweeted.

“Non-Malays do not want to take over anything or change any country’s name. We just want to live peacefully and ensure our children get a decent shot in life. Honestly,” he added.

Meanwhile, DAP lawmaker Syahredzan Johan felt that Mahathir’s remarks appeared to be a deliberate attempt at stirring racial unrest.

“Usually, I do not comment when Mahathir issues a statement, but this statement looks like a deliberate attempt at causing racial enmity (permusuhan kaum),” read Bangi MP’s tweet.

With the elections for six states around the corner, Mahathir appears to be leaning towards the Perikatan Nasional coalition led by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, whom he once accused of being a traitor.

The two are expected to meet to discuss Mahathir’s "Malay Proclamation" document. - Mkini
