KUALA LUMPUR: The government has engaged Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and other oil companies to ensure the country's fuel supply remains sufficient for about a month, allowing it to sustain the current subsidy mechanism.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said fuel pricing remains a key concern and must be managed based on facts and clarity.

"Fuel prices is an issue dear to my heart. We have to deal with it carefully, guided by facts. That is why we decided on RON95.

"Following discussions with Petronas and other oil companies, we can contain the situation for the next month or so. The people should be the last to bear the burden," he said at the Forum Ilmuwan Malaysia Madani Siri 9.

The government has reduced the quota for subsidised RON95 petrol to 200 litres per month from 300 litres, effective April 1.

The subsidised price remains at RM1.99 per litre.

Anwar said the government has also held a series of discussions with its economic team and agreed to extend measures to safeguard public interest over the medium and long term.

On the challenge of securing broad consensus, he called on all parties to set aside politics and focus on easing economic pressures while strengthening policy support amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

"My concern is that in a democratic country, it is difficult to get everyone on board. I appeal to all to put politics aside and focus on measures that can ease economic burdens and help the country navigate the current challenges," he added. - NST
