No laughing matter: Loke says govt in 'crisis mode' to tackle Iran war fallout

Putrajaya is operating in “crisis mode” amid severe global disruptions in various sectors due to the ongoing West Asia conflict, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Noting that the cabinet briefing earlier today had underscored the seriousness of the situation, Loke highlighted that while most Malaysians might not experience the conflict’s full repercussions in their day-to-day routines, the matter should not be “taken for granted”.

“This is not a laughing or joking matter. It is a very, very serious matter.

“The government is operating in crisis mode now. Even though we don’t feel it in our daily lives, the world is facing a global crisis,” Loke was quoted as saying in a speech at a school funding ceremony in Shah Alam today.

The minister clarified that his intention wasn’t to dampen the mood, particularly after the recent festivities, but emphasised the importance of staying informed and being ready for what’s ahead.

‘We will feel it sooner or later’

Besides the tragic loss of life and extensive humanitarian suffering in West Asia, the DAP secretary-general also pointed out that many industries worldwide have been affected by the over 100 percent surge in energy costs within the last month.

“For example, the Philippines has declared an energy emergency. Countries near us, such as Thailand and Vietnam, are already facing shortages, with people queuing for fuel.

“Thankfully, this situation is not happening in our country - but we cannot take things for granted, because sooner or later, we will feel the impact,” the minister added.

Noting that Malaysia’s status as an oil producer doesn’t shield it from a reliance on international markets and foreign supply networks, Loke said Putrajaya’s immediate priority is to ensure fuel supply stability.

“Our current supply is not expected to be disrupted until May. But if the war prolongs, we cannot guarantee that supply will not be affected. This is something all of us must pay full attention to,” he said.

The prolonged conflict in West Asia has exerted pressure on global energy markets, with crude oil prices now exceeding US$100 (RM400) per barrel, significantly increasing the country’s subsidy burden.

Over the last three weeks, energy shortages driven by the West Asia conflict have pushed diesel prices up by RM2.40, reaching approximately RM5.52 per litre.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also announced that the standard monthly entitlement for subsidised RON95 petrol, priced at RM1.99 per litre, will be reduced from 300 litres to 200 litres, effective tomorrow.

Adopt sustainability

Loke cautioned today that while most nations anticipate the economic and energy fallout to last between six and 12 months, or potentially longer if hostilities persist, an extended war could trigger a domino effect lasting up to two years, depending on how long and intense the conflict becomes.

As such, he urged Malaysians to adopt more sustainable habits, including better travel management aimed at reducing fuel consumption and decreasing food wastage.

“Food waste is a major issue in the country. We throw away tonnes of food every day - this not only wastes the cost of food, but also the cost of managing that waste. It is double wastage,” Loke said.

In a separate statement today, Anwar said today’s National Economic Action Council meeting had conducted an in-depth examination on the worsening global energy crisis and its implications for the national economy and the rakyat’s wellbeing.

“The fact is, the world is entering a more challenging and uncertain phase, and Malaysia is not spared from its impact. As such, we cannot be complacent or too comfortable.

“We must be prepared with high discipline, resilience, and a spirit of togetherness,” the prime minister said.

He also assured that the government will continue to act proactively based on data and reality, including seeking the views of industry players as well as small and medium enterprises, to ensure every step taken is comprehensive, balanced, and effective.

He further invited all citizens to strengthen the domestic economy by prioritising local goods and supporting home-grown entrepreneurs. - Mkini
