Limit outdoor exposure between 11am and 4pm, Zahid warns amid peak UV period

KUALA LUMPUR: The public are advised to reduce outdoor activities between 11am and 4pm, when ultraviolet (UV) radiation typically peaks, as the country experiences the Southwest Monsoon, which is expected to continue until September.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said particular attention should be given to children, senior citizens and those working outdoors amid hotter weather, less rainfall and clearer skies.

"The ozone layer is the Earth's natural shield against UV radiation from the sun. However, the level of UV radiation reaching the surface is also influenced by several factors, including the sun's position, cloud cover, ozone content and prevailing atmospheric conditions," he said in a Facebook post today.

Zahid, who is also chairman of the National Disaster Management Council, said besides reducing outdoor activities, several simple measures could be practised, including using sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating of 30 or higher, wearing suitable clothing, a hat and UV-protection sunglasses, and ensuring adequate water intake.

"Always be alert to current conditions and follow the information and advice issued by Met Malaysia (Malaysian Meteorological Department).

"Take care of yourself, take care of your family and do not take lightly the risks of prolonged exposure to sunlight," he said. - NST
