Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) and its executive vice-chairperson Salim Fateh Din are suing veteran journalist P Gunasegaram over an article concerning the LRT3 Shah Alam Line.
In a statement of claim dated July 29 and filed with the Shah Alam High Court, the plaintiffs seek RM100 million in damages for alleged reputational harm.
MRCB and Salim claimed that the article portrayed the company as having secured the LRT3 project through cronyism, political patronage, and political connections, rather than through a transparent, merit-based procurement process.
They also alleged that the article suggested MRCB was responsible for higher project costs and delays, while Salim had leveraged political connections to secure commercial advantages for the company.
The plaintiffs denied these allegations, describing them as untrue, baseless, and without valid justification.
MRCB and Salim had issued Gunasegaram a letter of demand on July 10, seeking the removal of the article, an apology, and a full retraction.
They alleged that Gunasegaram failed to comply and instead defended the article as fair comment.
MRCB and Salim further accused the writer of failing to seek their comments before publishing the allegations.
They claimed the article had damaged their reputation and credibility, undermined confidence among investors and business partners, and adversely affected MRCB’s share price.
Besides RM100 million in damages for loss of reputation, the plaintiffs are seeking general, aggravated, and/or exemplary damages.
They are also seeking injunctions to compel Gunasegaram to remove the disputed publications and restrain him from publishing similar material. - Mkini
