PETALING JAYA:
DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo today called upon Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Abd Halim Aman to share updates on the investigation into the so-called “corporate mafia”.

Gobind, also the digital minister, said the Cabinet directed a thorough probe into the matter back in March. He said that ample time had passed since then for both the police and the MACC to investigate the allegations.

Gobind also wanted both Khalid and Halim to state whether key figures who may help in the probe, such as businessman Victor Chin, have been called in to assist their investigations.

For the record, Chin denied his involvement with the “corporate mafia” back in March. The MMAG Holdings Bhd executive director said the use of “mafia tactics” to force takeovers does exist, but he insisted that he was a victim, not the perpetrator of such manoeuvres.

“Malaysians are entitled to know where things stand on this matter and what concrete steps will be taken next to address the issue,” Gobind said in a statement.

He also urged them to disclose when the probe might conclude.

“This is a matter of paramount public interest with international implications that will impact market confidence, making it a matter of national significance demanding swift and firm action,” Gobind said.

A Bloomberg report earlier this year alleged that MACC officers were part of a “corporate mafia” which provided intimidation “services” such as raids to pressure business executives to sell their shares.

Then MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki, however, rubbished the report. - FMT
