Malacca is considering becoming one of the first states to introduce a basic salary of between RM2,500 and RM2,800. Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh said the proposal will be studied before submitting to the federal government.
ADSHe said the move is aimed at improving young people's earning prospects in the state and giving them better opportunities to build their future there.
Rauf also said that the state is looking to bring more women who left the workforce back into employment, particularly through new developments such as the Inland Port in Alor Gajah.
“I will look into it. For example, at Port of Tanjung Pelepas, women were given employment opportunities as container truck drivers within the port area.
“We will look at similar opportunities at the Inland Port in Alor Gajah. We will see if there are suitable jobs for women to move forward,” Bernama reported him saying.
PKR Youth's Legal and Public Complaints Bureau called on the police and other enforcement agencies to follow MACC's decision to stop requiring suspects to wear lock-up attire when appearing in court for remand proceedings.
In a statement today, its chief Khairul Naim Rafidi said lock-up attire should only be worn while suspects are being held in lock-up facilities, while the use of handcuffs should be based on security requirements, proper risk assessments and the circumstances of each case, rather than imposed as a matter of routine.
He also called on the government to establish uniform national guidelines to ensure all suspects who have yet to be charged are treated fairly, with dignity and professionalism.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has questioned the government’s plan to study a hybrid taxation system combining the existing sales and service tax (SST) with the goods and services tax (GST), saying the government should instead consider reviving GST.
Lim noted that the wider tax credits are extended under the proposed hybrid system, the more it will resemble GST, as businesses will be able to claim back taxes already paid.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng He said the government must first explain the proposed system's financial implications, including how much of this year's expected RM59.6 billion in SST revenue businesses would claim back, how much would be refunded, and how much the government would ultimately retain.
The DAP MP also questioned how quickly refunds would be made, which sectors would continue to face tax-on-tax, and how much additional compliance costs businesses would bear.
These factors, Lim added, would determine whether the new system is actually simpler, fairer and more effective than the current SST. - FMT
