Umno rep uses Catholic joke to praise Zahid's political wisdom

 

UMNO AGM | | A Selangor Umno leader today used a Catholic-themed joke to illustrate the importance of political wisdom while praising party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's leadership.

Speaking before thousands at the annual general assembly, Sepang Umno chief Noorazli Said recounted a joke about a priest driving a manual Proton Saga who spotted a nun waiting at a bus stop and offered her a ride home.

But every time the priest changed gears, his hand would brush against the nun's thigh, and he would leave it there.

Each time this happened, the nun reminded him to recall Psalm 129, prompting the priest to withdraw his hand.

Upon reaching home, the priest checked the Bible to see what Psalm 129 actually said, only to realise that it was not what he had assumed.

"Do you want to know what Psalm 129 says? ... Go forth and seek further up and you will find glory," Noorazli (above) said at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre during the debates on Zahid's policy speech.

The line, which is a variation of a joke sometimes circulated in Christian circles, does not actually appear in Psalm 129.

Noorazli then explained that the story was meant to convey the importance of staying focused and knowing what one wants to achieve.

BN’s 2018 defeat

He had earlier referred to a speech Zahid gave to party members following BN's defeat in the 2018 general election.

Noorazli said Umno members were demoralised by the coalition's massive electoral loss and ashamed of the social stigma associated with being an Umno member.

At the party's AGM following the loss, Zahid had told members that Umno would rise again and lead the government by the end of the parliamentary term, Noorazli said.

"It was illogical. At the time, we and the delegates felt that maybe the president had a little trouble with accepting the loss," he admitted.

However, the first Pakatan Harapan government was toppled through the so-called Sheraton Move, and the administration that followed, led by Muhyiddin Yassin, eventually lost majority support.

Amid the political crisis, Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob received sufficient backing to become the ninth prime minister, which Noorazli said fulfilled Zahid's vow.

After delivering his jest, Noorazli said party members had initially assumed Zahid's policy speech at this year's AGM would be "just another speech".

"But this time, the president's speech truly proved that this is the next prime minister we should endorse in the upcoming 16th general election," he added.

He described Zahid's "Malaysia Biru" vision and his ideas for charting the nation's future as something young Umno members had not expected.
