BEWARE OF CONMEN FOR OLD FOLKS GRANT

REPORT…. Mdm Lee and her husband Mr Chew showing her police report to Hiew

By: DAP MEDIA

THERE are many elderly people being cheated by a team of conmen in the Kota Kinabalu City area. The Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Hiew King Cheu was informed of some of the incidents by the victims who were being conned.

A most recent case involving an elderly woman by the name as Mdm. Lee, age81, who lives in Likas, she was approached by four conmen, two male and two female in their 30’s at her house few days ago saying that they are the authorized agent from the government department, and they can assist her to apply for the old folks assistance money of RM300, (Bantuan Orang Tua).

They brought her to Kingfisher Park in Likas and asked her to leave behind all her jewelries in the car because they don’t wish the government officers to see her wearing expensive ear rings, necklace, gold rings etc.. Mdm Lee followed their instruction and left the jewelries in the car and went with them to the upstairs of a shop lot. They made excuses and asked her to wait, and they got away from the other side of the building and disappeared with her hand bag and her jewelries worth RM3,000. Luckily, she did not bring along her Mycard and Bank book, otherwise her loses will be even bigger.

Mdm. Lee later found out that she had been conned and she went to make a police report later with her relatives.

Hiew had received similar cases involving the conmen team and most of the victim had lost valuables and money in different ways. He said the conmen team is approaching elderly people in town and they travel in big cars and suspected with false registration number plate mounted. The latest car that they used is believed to be a white color Toyota Innova.

MP Hiew urges the general public be aware of this conmen team and do not simply open any gates and doors to strangers who claim to be the appointed agents or officers of some government department. They usually wear faked identity barge or tags that looks real. It will be useful to call for someone to verify and double check. It is as far as until to date, there is no such agent appointed to carry out or provide assistance to help elderly people to apply for the government assistance old folk fund.

The police has been informed of such conmen activities in town and if you see any one suspicious and not right approaching your house, you should immediately contact the police at the police hotline 088 221191 for help. - Sabahkini
