KOTA KINABALU: More than 70 passengers from the Philippines were stranded for more than two hours at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) following a bomb threat inside a Cebu Pacific plane.
Flight 5J733, which left Manila around 4pm yesterday for Kota Kinabalu, was forced to make an emergency landing at KKIA Terminal Two around 5.50pm.
State police chief Hamza Taib who confirmed the incident said police had immediately deployed its bomb unit and General Operations Force to Terminal 2.
“Once the plane landed, all the passengers were evacuated and the bomb unit and GOF went in to check the plane.
“All passengers, including the captain and flight crew members, are safe.
“We are still investigating… ,” Hamzah said adding that all no one was injured during the landing.
However all the passengers were quarantined for security check and clearance once they arrived. They were released around 8.30pm last night.
Airport sources said the bomb scare did not disrupt airport operations.
“There was no delay in incoming or outgoing flights. Operations went on as usual,” the source said.
Meanwhile Borneo Post quoted 23-year-old Jomar Pacheco as saying that passengers only realised what was going on when they arrived at Terminal Two.
“When we arrived, we (passengers) were asked not to leave the arrival hall as there would be a security check.
“Police checked all our luggage without questioning us,” he said.
Meanwhile sources at the airport said the bomb scare did not affect any flights, leaving and arriving, at Terminal 2. - FMT
