Anwar: No grounds given for my arrest

Anwar Ibrahim
KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claimed today that he was not told why he was arrested on July 16, 2008 when he was detained by heavily armed policemen.

The PKR defacto leader, who was testifying in his ongoing Sodomy II trial, said that prior arrangements were already made for him to appear at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters on that fateful day. His counsel Sankara Nair and DSP Jude Pereira had agreed on the arrangements.

Sankara, who also testified in court today, said that Anwar had a meeting that morning with the then Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) officials with regards to his “black-eye case” in 1998.

Anwar said he was heading home to freshen up before going to meet the police when he was “ambushed” by balaclava-clad policemen in unmarked cars armed with semi-automatic weapons.

Anwar maintained that throughout his arrest period and release the day after, no mention was made on why he was arrested.

“Only when I went to meeting room, Jude made reference to the charge. But grounds of arrest were not given.

“Jude just said arrest under 112, but no grounds of arrest were given,” Anwar told the court today.

His counsel Sankara, who was present during the time of the arrest, echoed Anwar’s statement.

“The police officers did not give him any grounds of arrest,” said the lawyer who maintained his stand despite repeated questioning by lead prosecutor Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden.
