PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong urged Singaporeans to close ranks and work together, pledging to 'put right what is wrong' and engage the people in more decisions and trade-offs on major policies.

Shortly after the last results came in, Mr Lee met the media for the traditional post-election press conference in the early hours of Sunday, at which he gave a sobering assessment of how the People's Action Party (PAP) had fared.

He expressed disappointment over the PAP's defeat in Aljunied GRC, which cost the government two ministers, and its failure to wrestle back Hougang from the Workers' Party (WP).

PM Lee called the just-ended election a 'vigorous' one, as it gave voters a full airing of all views and aspirations, and made them think about their political choices and the nation's future.

Although voters have given the PAP a strong mandate, he said he has taken note of the frustrations, grievances and unfulfilled aspirations that were ventilated during the nine days of campaigning.

'We hear all your voices, whether it's expressed in person or over the Internet. The PAP will analyse the results of the elections, learn from what has emerged in this general election, put right what is wrong, improve on what can be made better, and also improve ourselves to serve Singaporeans better,' said Mr Lee.

'And that means not only the Government working hard on its own with a population of passive but engaging Singaporeans in the more difficult decisions and trade-offs which governing Singapore involves.

'There are often no easy choices and the more we can appreciate this and grapple with the dilemmas and the trade-offs together, I think the better the answers we'll come up with, and the more we'll be able to have workable solutions.' - Straits Times
