Anwar: Get ready to save this country

We have to make it to Putrajaya for the sake of our children and to save this country, he says.

KUCHING: Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to be ready for the next general election, expected to be called soon.

He said that the outcome of the next general election – legally not due until March 2013 – would be crucial for the future of the country.

“We must organise and strengthen ourselves and prepare for the next election. We could not make it in Sarawak in the state election but for the 13th general election, we have to make it to Putrajaya for the sake of our children and to save this country,” he said at a Bersih gathering in Kuching last night.

“The most important thing is that we remain strong,” said Anwar, pointing out that there was a sudden upsurge of awareness among Malaysians of various races, young and old, women and children.

“The thinking element in our society has changed. I have seen among the civil servants, the professionals and even the policemen whom I met privately. They all want change, fair and free election.

“The international community is aware of what is happening in Malaysia. With the Bersih rally, the entire world is asking Najib Tun Razak why Malaysia cannot have fair and clean elections,” said Anwar, also the PKR de facto leader.

Pakatan Rakyat is bouyed by a rise in support for them following a huge rally in Kuala Lumpur on July 9. The rally was organised by Bersih 2.0 to call for a clean and fair election.

EC unfair

According to Anwar, Barisan Nasional and Umno do not want fair and clean elections because “they want to cheat” to win.

“Even the Election Commission chairperson speaks and behaves like an Umno branch chairman who is arrogant,” he said.

“I know of a house in Permatang Pauh where there are four or five people occupying it, but when there is an election, 82 people cast their votes from the house.

“When we informed the EC about it, the officer said that I still won. It is not the question of whether I won or not, but whether there was cheating or not. Maybe I would have won with a bigger majority.

“The officer also said that if there was cheating, how come Pakatan Rakyat had won six states including Kuala Lumpur.

“This is the type of arrogance displayed by the Election Commission,” Anwar said.

He added that a clean and fair election in March 2008 would have seen Pakatan Rakyat forming the federal government.
