BN to hold talks with EC: Cheat more?

BN to hold talks with EC: Cheat more?

KUALA LUMPUR - The Barisan Nasional is committed towards ensuring free and fair elections and will engage the Election Commission (EC) into achieving this objective, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“We will hold discussions with the EC.

“Others can do the same to allow the commission to come up with methods which will ensure the electoral process is beyond dispute,” he said after chairing the Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting yesterday.

He said Barisan wanted to dispel the misconception that it was not committed towards free and fair elections.

He noted that the quest for free and fair elections was not the monopoly of the Opposition.

On calls by the Opposition for an emergency Parliament sitting after Ramadan to debate electoral reforms, Najib said a statement would be issued on the matter in due course.

On another matter, Najib said the recent unexpected wave of riots in London and several parts of England justified the Government's handling of the Bersih 2.0 street demonstrations on July 9.

“What was decided was done to avoid any untoward incidents that could have resulted in the burning of business premises and attacks on bystanders,” he said.

He said it was regrettable that the Bersih organisers had rejected the Government's offer to hold their gathering at the Shah Alam Stadium.

Meanwhile, Najib said that Persatuan Penerbit Televisyen Malaysia, Gabung Persatuan Penjaja dan Peniaga Kecil Melayu Malaysia, Persatuan Seni Silat Gayung Malaysia and Persatuan Bajau Sabah had been admitted as Barisan associates.

He said Barisan was still open to application by other groups seeking to join the coalition as associate members.
