EC deputy chief told to stop flip flopping

Rasah MP Anthony Loke today criticised Election Commission deputy chief Wan Ahmad Wan Omar for his alleged flip-flopping over the powers of the EC.

NONESpeaking at the DAP headquarter in Kuala Lumpur today, Loke questioned how Wan Ahmad (left) could refuse to accept the recommendations of the mooted parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reform when he had earlier claimed that the EC was powerless.

"Just two weeks ago when he debated with (Bersih 2.0 chief) Ambiga (Sreenevasan) he said the EC was powerless and it is bound by the law.

"Now he says he can reject the recommendations (of the PSC), that the EC is independent... How did EC suddenly become so powerful?" Loke said.

In an interview with Sin Chew Daily published yesterday, Wan Ahmad was quoted as saying that EC may not accept all of the PSC's recommendations, describing the commission as an independent body free from the authority of other departments.

However during the debate with Ambiga, He had described EC as a merely a "management body" in the face of a hostile pro-reform crowd.

"Wan Ahmad needs to make up his mind whether EC is powerful or powerless," Loke said.

Also present at the press conference was DAP assistant national organising secretary Vincent Wu.
