Muhyiddin: No outcome yet on teaching Maths, Science in both English and BM

August 16, 2011

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 16 — Education minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today the ministry is still studying to possibility of dual-language instruction for Science and Mathematics in schools.

The deputy prime minister explained they had to see if it could be introduced without any downsides.

Education director-general Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud’s sub-committee is currently looking at how to uphold Bahasa Malaysia while strengthening English among students, Bernama Online reported.

Muhyiddin (picture) told reporters this after presenting prices to winners of the National Creative Science and Mathematics Competition 2011.

In April Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said parents’ input will be gathered before deciding on the medium of instruction. Najib said that the education ministry will consider if some schools can teach in English without affecting adversely teaching and learning processes.

Muhyiddin said that the ministry must make a well considered decision and not rush into a decision.
