Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office, Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, who is in charge of Islamic Affairs, said this is in light of the fact that the number of people arrested for the offence has risen over the years.
Currently, Section 14 of the ordinance provides for a fine of up to RM1,000 or a jail term of up to six months for the first offence, or both, and a fine of up to RM2,000 or a jail term of up to a year, or both, for subsequent offences.
The state government may also introduce community service as a form of punishment, he said.
Daud confirmed that 25 people had been arrested by the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department since Monday.
He added that the state government was exploring the possibility of naming and shaming those found guilty of not fasting in the mass media as a deterrent to others.
