Kelantan Umno shifts to 'top gear' for polls

Kelantan Umno has appointed all heads of its 14 divisions there as election directors of their respective constituencies, fuelling speculations that polls are near.

According to Bernama, its leader Mustapa Mohamed said the 14 directors would then appoint their own directors for the state seats in their respective constituencies.

Mustapa told reporters today in Kota Bharu that the appointments were made to ensure that the state Umno machinery was in "top gear" as the 13th general election could be called at any time.

Kelantan has been under PAS rule since 1990 under the leadership of Chief Minister Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

BN came close to toppling PAS back in 2004 but the situation was drastically reversed in the 2008 general elections.

PAS currently holds 38 state legislative assembly seats while PKR holds 1 seat. Umno has six.

Several recent moves by Putrajaya has signalled that premier Najib Abdul Razak may call for snap polls soon, despite BN's mandate ending only in the first half of 2013.

Yesterday, Sin Chew Daily reported that the federal government would be spending up to RM2.5 million in constituencies where it had won, or "grey" areas which either Pakatan Rakyat or BN won with a small margin.

The daily reports that "black" areas, where Pakatan holds both Parliament and state legislative assembly seats, would not be given any sorts of allocations.

Coupled with a half-month bonus for civil servants last month, the funds are meant to designed a feel-good effect prior to calling for polls.
