'Don't 'syok sendiri' over Queen's yellow dress'

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has ticked off the opposition, telling its members not to read too much into Queen Elizabeth’s dress colour when she granted an audience to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in July.

NONEJanganlah kita syok sendiri (let’s not be self-indulgent)... that’s your intention... sometimes I have noticed (R Sivarasa) wearing blue (which is) Barisan Nasional’s (colour). Does it signify that you are with BN?” asked deputy minister A Kohilan Pillay (left) .

During Question time today, Sivarasa (PKR-Subang) asked the ministry whether the government had taken into consideration the interpretation that the queen was supportive of Bersih 2.0.

“We have to understand that there are (diplomatic) protocols in the Buckingham Palace. If we evaluate this in detail, it is no light matter... every move is scripted in detail from Her Majesty’s hats to clothes,” he said.

NONEQueen Elizabeth’s bright yellow outfit had assumed prominence among pro-election reform activists, who had seen it as subtle message endorsing their struggle after the Bersih 2.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur on July 9.

Prior to the rally, the government had banned all Bersih-related paraphernalia, including the iconic yellow T-shirts, and clamped down on some 1,700 supporters on the day of the rally.

Earlier, responding to a question as to whether the queen’s choice of colour “would affect the relationship between Malaysia and the United Kingdom”, Kohilan said that yellow symbolises “joy and happiness”.

“Queen Elizabeth’s attire for official functions in spring and summer in the UK, as well during her visits to foreign states with a warmer climate, usually would be in soft and bright colours. Indeed since 1954, it has been evident that Her Majesty is fond of yellow outfits,” he said.

“In 2011, during her official visit to Ireland... (she) wore yellow to Croke Park accompanied by Irish President Mary McAleese. During her grandson Prince William’s marriage to Catherine Middleton on April 29, (she) wore a yellow hat and dress.”

‘Her wish lah!’

However, Sivarasa insisted that the choice of colour was no coincidence, given the fact that the Bersih 2.0 rally had received international coverage.

NONE“When our prime minister landed in London, protesters were wearing yellow at the airport... surely the Queen was briefed on the matter,” said Sivarasa (right), to the amusement of the opposition bench.

Mohamad Aziz (BN-Seri Gading) then snapped at him, saying that the question itself was disparaging of the British monarchy.

“What Queen Elizabeth wears is her wish lah... (during the) Bersih (rally) you wore yellow. (That) doesn’t mean everyone who wears yellow is supporting, is it?”said Mohamad.

“This is self-indulgence... it is an insult to Queen Elizabeth... this is the opposition, everything is politicised and these are the type of questions that will weaken ties between England and Malaysia.”
