Selangor doesn't want to get involved in Saturday's rally

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the state government would not get involved with the Himpun rally scheduled for this Saturday afternoon but would not prohibit its staff from participating in it.

“This programme is organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO). The state government does not want to get involved as this is an NGO matter,” he said.

The menteri besar however did not want to reply or commit himself on whether he supported the rally or not.

khalid ibrahim and selangor stateKhalid refuse to respond when asked whether his state exco members could participate in the rally, but said if the Selangor government officers wanted to participate it is up to them.

“As long as the gathering is outside office hours,” he said.

Speculation is rife that exco member in charge of Islamic affairs Dr Hasan Ali could participate in the programme.

State exco member for education Dr Halimah Ali said the state government is organising its own programme at the Melawati stadium next door.

“This has nothing to do with the Himpun rally. It is a mere coincidence that the event is held at the same time and next door,” she said.

The Himpun rally, called the ‘Gathering of a Million Faithful’ at the Shah Alam Stadium between 2pm and 6pm, is being organised to “preserve the sanctity of Islam”.

Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria is slated as one of the speakers at the event.
