Bersih deja-vu: Police to quizz Ambiga over Seksualiti Merdeka

In a series of moves reminiscent of the Bersih crackdown, police have summoned Ambiga Sreenevasan, the movement's chief, for supporting the homosexual and transgender rights group Seksualiti Merdeka.

"It looks like Umno has run out of ideas again and is rehashing the Bersih script. Their objective is to discredit human rights which are a cornerstone of the reformasi (reform) movement," PKR vice president Tian Chua toldMalaysia Chronicle.

"This is a calculated political ploy to turn public sentiment, especially amongst the Muslims, against the Pakatan Rakyat. Ambiga and Seksualiti Merdeka are just pawns in the Umno game. We strongly condemn the attempt to intimidate Ambiga."

Ambiga had agreed to open the annual Seksualiti Merdeka event slated for November 9 to 13, but has stated that she was not among the organising committee.

“I can confirm that Datuk Ambiga has been asked to go to Dang Wangi police station on Tuesday for questioning in connection with Seksualiti Merdeka,” Malaysian Insider reported Bersih steering committee member Andrew Khoo as saying.

When humanity in Malaysia dies

Seksualiti Merdeka has been holding its yearly event since 2008 and the unprecedented attacks by the police and Muslim groups have shocked its organising committee. Police have already banned their event, citing a threat to public order.

Perkasa and other Muslim groups including from Umno and PAS have held noisy protests, hurling nasty invective against them including calling them 'animals'.

The movement has since sought a meeting with the Inspector General of Police, Ismail Omar. In the meantime, the organizers have agreed to stop all public events.

"The blanket ban on Seksualiti Merdeka’s programme this year is unprecedented as we have been conducting similar events over the past few years. In the interest of the safety of our participants, we will not proceed with all public events of Seksualiti Merdeka while we seek a meeting with the Inspector General of Police YB Tan Sri Ismail Omar to explain the objectives of Seksualiti Merdeka," the movement said in a statement out on Saturday.

"The Malaysian government should, in fact, condemn all forms of discrimination, stigmatisation and threats of violence and murder in the name of any religion or belief system; and uphold the human rights of the LGBTIQ community and sexual rights as human rights. The day Malaysia loses its humanity is the day that all hope for a better Malaysia dies."
