KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 14 — Police have submitted the findings of its latest probe against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for allegedly providing false information in the Datuk T sex video case to the Attorney-General, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said today.
In confirming this, the home minister said the decision whether to charge Anwar would be left in the hands of the country’s top lawyer.
“Whether it will be brought to court will be determined by the Attorney-General... what (Inspector-General of Police) Tan Sri Ismail Omar informed me was merely that the investigation papers have been surrendered to the A-G,” he told a press conference after a police function here.
Hishammuddin(picture) defended the police officers handling the probe, saying they were merely carrying out their rightful duties.
He added he was not aware of the full details of the probe and that of all other cases involving Anwar and the police.
The latest probe on Anwar was opened after investigating officer DSP Shanmugan Moorthy lodged a police report claiming Anwar had knowingly given him false information, an offence under section 182 of the Penal Code.
The crime is punishable with a six-month jail term or a fine of RM2,000.
The new police investigation is expected to pile pressure on the opposition leader, who has steadfastly denied being the man seen having sex with a purported prostitute in the video.
The video was shown to the media in April by former Malacca Chief Minister Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik, businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah and former Perkasa treasurer-general Datuk Shuib Lazim — collectively known as Datuk T.
