Government insists no commission paid to Perimekar

The government today insisted that it did not pay any commissions to company Perimekar Sdn Bhd, which acted as a go-between for the purchase of the Scorpene submarines.

NONEIn fact, Deputy Defence Minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad (right) said finding any documentary evidence of such would mean the government is “stupid”.

“You think the government would write down that it paid commission to Perimekar? That means the government of Malaysia is stupid!

“Why don’t you use your brain?” he asked.

He said this during a heated exchange with Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai) during the winding-up of the committee stage debate of the Supply Bill 2012.

Asked if the government now confirms that it had never paid a single sen in commission to Perimekar, Abdul Latiff (BN-Mersing) said: “Benar, benar, benar dan benar!” (True, true, true and true!)”

It was revealed in Parliament last year that Perimekar was paid 114.96 million euro (approximately RM574.8 million) for “coordination and support services” involving the submarine deal.

‘Subpoena Zahid and he’ll testify’

He also reiterated that Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is more than ready to testify in the French courts, where a case on kickbacks paid by the French arms dealer DCNS is pending.

“Just send a subpoena, he has already said that he will testify,” Abdul Latiff said.

To a question by Nurul Izzah, he said this does not mean that the cabinet has made a decision to allow Ahmad Zahid to testify.

“Send the subpoena first,” he said.

French public prosecutors are investigating the case involving DCNS’ deal with Malaysia and several other countries, following a complaint filed by Malaysian human rights NGO Suaram.
