Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad today preempted what he said would be possible manipulation of his absence from the country on the day he is to be charged with giving a religious lecture in the state without certification from the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais).
"I don't want people to manipulate the news. And I don't want Jais officers waiting for me on my return with an arrest warrant.
"I am supposed to appear before the Syariah Court on Nov 24, but since I am on my way to Palestine, I have appointed my lawyer, giving him thewakalah (authority to represent) to appear in court on my behalf," he told a press conference in the Parliament lobby today.
Scheduled to fly off to Cairo later today, Khalid will be joining fellow PAS parliamentarians Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (Rantau Panjang) and Siti Maria Mahmud (Kota Raja) in the Global March to Jerusalem programme until Nov 26, along with parliamentarians from 15 nations across four continents.
The march, organised by the Euro-Asian Parliamentary Union, aims to bring the plight of the Palestinians suffering under Israeli occupation to centrestage globally.
Khalid, who is also Selangor PAS deputy commissioner, was detained by Jais under Section 119 of the Selangor Islamic Religious Administration Enactment for giving a sermon in a surau at Taman Seri Sementa, Kapar in Klang on Aug 16 without prior permission.
The Shah Alam MP was to be charged on Nov 24 in the Klang Syariah court for the said offence.
