KR1M defends milk powder, says Pua miscalculated

November 26, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 — Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia (KR1M) denied today its Growing Up Milk powder contains an overdose of Vitamin A, accusing DAP’s Tony Pua of miscalculating the recommended daily serving size.

Based on an individual serving size of four 30g scoops, the DAP national publicity secretary had claimed that four servings of the milk powder daily, as recommended for toddlers aged between one and two years, totals 480g.

At 3,240IU of vitamin A per 100g, this totals to a consumption of 15,552IU in a day, which is over three times the 5,000IU permitted limit for vitamin A in milk powder.

KR1M clarified today that each serving should only contain 30g of milk powder and not 120g as claimed by Pua (picture).

“When they drink four times per day, the amount will be 120gm per day, which means that consumers will consume only 3,888IU vitamin A per day,” the government thrift shop said in a statement.

“Therefore, as justified by the Ministry of Health recently, 1 Malaysia Growing Up milk is safe to be consumed as the total amount of Vitamin A does not exceed the maximum allowed level as claimed by certain parties.”

Opposition lawmakers, led by Pua, PKR’s Nurul Izzah and Dr Dzulkelfy Ahmad of PAS, have claimed several products sold at Kedai Rakyat are of inferior quality, with some failing to meet legal requirements.

These include Growing Up milk powder, which the opposition said contained excessive amounts of vitamin A, which could lead to liver problems and reduced bone density in children.

Dato' Sri Liow Tiong Lai later declared the milk safe for consumption after testing by the Health Ministry and berated PR for allegedly misleading the public with its claims.

Pua, however, has disputed the ministry’s findings, claiming that Liow misread the maximum permitted dosage of vitamin A in the Food Regulations Act.

Liow has since accepted Pua’s offer to openly discuss the issue in front of the press in Parliament on Tuesday.
