Liow picks up Kedai Rakyat gauntlet

November 25, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has accepted Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) invitation to hold open talks on the quality of several Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia products.

“@tonypua is accusing us of a mistake he made which he refuses to admit. MOH welcomes the dialogue and is prepared to meet and guide him in whatever way possible,” the health minister said in a Twitter post this evening.

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua earlier today invited Liow to resolve the ongoing dispute over seven products sold at the government-backed thrift shop directly instead of airing their disagreements through the media.

The DAP publicity chief said he had faxed a letter to the minister this morning inviting him to discuss the issue in an open-door meeting in Parliament on Tuesday, which would be open to full media coverage.

The opposition would issue an open apology if its allegations against the products in question - fruit jam, ice-cream, evaporated milk, sweetened creamer, tinned sardines, tinned curry chicken and Growing Up milk powder - were found to be untrue, Pua added.

PR lawmakers, led by Pua, PKR’s Nurul Izzah and Dr Dzulkelfy Ahmad of PAS, have claimed several products sold at Kedai Rakyat are of substandard quality, with some failing to meet legal requirements.

These include Growing Up milk powder, which the opposition said contained excessive amounts of vitamin A, which could lead to liver problems and reduced bone density in children.

Liow (picture) later declared the milk safe for consumption after testing by the Health Ministry and berated PR for allegedly misleading the public with its claims.

Pua, however, has disputed the ministry’s findings, claiming that Liow misread the maximum permitted dosage of vitamin A in the Food Regulations Act.
