MB Kedah: We switched to Camrys after Perdana kept breaking down

ALOR SETAR - The state government opted to buy five Toyota Camrys last year due to the high maintenance cost of the Proton Perdana V6s, said Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak.

"The cars, which were paid for in cash last year, are being used by state executive council members as their Perdanas kept breaking down," he told the state assembly here yesterday.

"The Perdanas were already more than five years old and had to undergo frequent repairs.

"When I came into office in 2008, I defended the cars when others complained of its high maintenance."

However, he added that the maintenance bill was too high to keep the cars.

Azizan was replying to a question from Datuk Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail (BN-Guar Chempedak).

He said the Auditor-General's Report 2010 had pointed out that the maintenance cost for the cars was "too high and not economical for the state government".

Azizan said the Mercedes-Benz S Class, bought by the state, was not only used by him but also by members of the Kedah royal family and other dignitaries.

Azizan said the Mercedes and Toyota Camrys belonged to the state and whoever leads the government in the future could also use them .
