MIC chief calls for 'urgent revival' in teaching of English

KUALA LUMPUR - MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel has called for a revival in the teaching of English in the country, while stressing that Bahasa Malaysia was very important for Malaysians.

"Proficiency in both Bahasa Malaysia and English is a must for our students to be more marketable.

"We should not neglect the English language. It is a global language," he said in a statement here Saturday.

Palanivel said English usage in the country should not be allowed to decline.

"There should be an urgent revival in the teaching of English," he added.

He also thanked the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister for listening to the views of students, parents and the public on the continued usage of English in teaching Science and Maths in schools.

"The move by the Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is a move in the right direction to appease parents, who would have otherwise been angered.

"It is also a move in the right direction for the sake of the affected students' future." he said.
