DAP’s Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen told a press conference here that under the Food Act 1983, any person found to be promoting the sale of any substandard food product would be liable to legal action.
He pointed out that Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had on Wednesday admitted that the 1 Malaysia oyster sauce sold at the government’s thrift store Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia (KR1M) had failed legal requirements and had to be recalled.
“He said the oyster sauce contravened the regulations. And under the law, those who promote such products are liable for prosecution,” Chong said.
He said Section 17 of the Act states that if convicted, an individual is liable to a jail term of not more than three years or a fine or both.
“And who else has been promoting KR1M products if not for Najib and his entire Cabinet?” he said.
