Nine-hour day for teachers project shelved, says Muhyiddin

November 19, 2011

LABUAN, Nov 19 — The pioneer project that requires teachers in Malacca, Sarawak, Pahang and Johor to work a nine-hour day has been discontinued, Bernama Online reported Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as announcing this evening.

The deputy prime minister, who is also education minister, told the news portal the decision was made in order to allow the government to evaluate a study conducted on the project which first began with 19 schools in Malacca.

He said he has notified the Public Service Department (PSD) director-general to discontinue the study for the time being.

The government’s decision is also due to the fact many teachers don’t seem to have a clear understanding of the project’s goals and are under the impression that it only serves to increase their workload and responsibilities while in actual fact, it is designed to boost the teaching profession in Malaysia, Muhyiddin added.
