Selangor sultan regrets statement made by Aziz Bari

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, today expressed regret over the allegation by contitutional expert Prof Abdul Aziz Bari that the annual financial reports of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) and the Selangor Tithes Board (LZS) were exempted from being audited.

The Ruler said the allegation was incorrect because he had been informed about the accounts of the two state government agencies which had been audited by the Auditor-General’s Office and had obtained a clean certificate from the Auditor-General each year.

“I am deeply upset when I was informed that there was a report stating that Professor Abdul Aziz Bari from Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia had made a statement that the accounts of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council and the Selangor Tithes Board were not audited and exempted from being audited.

“Thus, I hope Professor Abdul Aziz Bari will not make any statement that can create confusion and doubt among the people on the transparency and integrity of Mais and LZS before he obtains accurate facts,” he said when opening the Selangor Audit Department’s Wisma Audit in Shah Alam today.

A news portal, when reporting on the amendment to the Selangor Islamic Religion Administration Enactment recently, among other things stated that “some of the amendments also gave Mais the power to collect and distribute zakat (tithes) as well as fitrah and free the council’s accounts from being audited by the Auditor-General”.

Earlier, Abdul Aziz created controversy because his statement was said to have questioned the statement by the sultan of Selangor pertaining to the issue on the church inspection in Damansara in August.

Meanwhile, Abdul Aziz in his clarification to the media via e-mail said that he would seek an audience with the sultan of Selangor as soon as possible to clear the air on the matter.

“I am not out to antagonise him (sultan). I think HRH (His Royal Highness) knows I have written extensively on the role and powers of the rulers, as head of state and head of religion.

“Looks like there are people who are out to paint a black image of me to the sultan,” he said.

Construction work on Wisma Audit Selangor, which was estimated to cost RM18.5 million including the cost of land, was completed on April 6.
