RPK: Anwar unfit to be PM, 'may be' gay

Fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin said Anwar Ibrahim, the person he once defended during the reformasi era, to be an unfitting prime minister candidate

In an exclusive interview with Mingguan Malaysia, the weekend edition of Utusan Malaysia, Raja Petra said Anwar was incapable of running his own party PKR and Selangor, where he is economic advisor.

In addition to this, Raja Petra claims that his one-time ally “may be” a homosexual.

“If someone asks: ‘Is Anwar a homosexual?’, I will reply ‘maybe’, but he cannot be a prime minister. That is the reality,” said Raja Petra, who met UtusanBerita Harian and New Straits Times in Singapore recently.

The interview was published just a week ahead of the January 9 Sodomy II trial verdict. Anwar stands accused of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Throughout the interview, Raja Petra does not explicitly allude to Anwar being a homosexual and in fact states that a person’s sexual preference would not change his opinion of that person.

Eskay’s honey trap

However, he explains that in Malaysia, unlike Western countries such as Australia, a person who aspires for public office cannot be a homosexual.

“If you want to be gay. Go ahead. (But) you cannot be a leader and (be) gay at the same time. In Australia, you can. You can be a minister and be gay. In Malaysia, you have to make a choice,” he said.

Unlike Raja Petra, the interviewers allude to Anwar having “moral issues”, that Saiful is the victim and that the PKR leader had refused to talk about the elusive “Omega watch” incident.

Raja Petra skirted the question on Saiful but believes that Eskay Shazryl Abdullah - one third of the Datuk T trio - had set Anwar up to be video recorded in a sexual tryst.

“I believe he (Anwar) was set up in a honey trap,” said Raja Petra.

Raja Petra never mentioned the Omega Watch - a object which Eskay said he, allegedly on Anwar’s orders, retrieved from the room where the tryst happened.

Anwar created a ‘monster’

Eskay had challenged Anwar to produce the watch if the latter was still in possession of it. Anwar had refused to do so.

Despite being asked about the watch twice, Raja Petra makes no mention of it.

For Raja Petra, he said he was not concerned about the verdict of Sodomy II but instead wants the focus of the civil liberties movement to press for change beyond Anwar.

He said that Anwar had failed as the economic advisor of Selangor which has not seen any drastic changes, but instead believes that the level of corruption had remained the same since the BN administration.

“Anwar said: ‘During meetings, (Menteri Besar) Khalid (Ibrahim) is egoistic and don’t listen. We can’t control him’. To me, you (Anwar) chose him and he is not performing.

“Now you are having problems with him - being egoistic and hard headed - What are you going to do? You created a monster,” said Raja Petra.

The bigger picture

He adds that the public must also evaluate Anwar’s appointment as economic advisor of Selangor and administration of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

“Over the past three years as economic advisor, what advice have you given? He has been overseas more than 60 times over the past three years.

“He should be administrating the state and performing his party duties and administrating Pakatan. Pakatan is in shambles now,” he said.

Asked if the Malaysia Today blog which Raja Petra runs is now on a campaign to attack Anwar, the blogger said his campaign was to realign the focus of the discerning public.

“We want the people to see the bigger picture... We want to see change. Is it about Anwar or the country? Anwar can be a factor but he is not the main objective.

“The people easily shift focus. They are feeling disturbed. Sometimes they go off-target and in the wrong direction... If Anwar has been wronged, we will fight for him.

“But don’t ask the whole country to fight for Anwar because the country should be fighting for the good of the country,” he said.
