UPSI assembly scuffle: Police almost done with probe

January 03, 2012
IPOH, Jan 3 — Police have almost completed their investigation into what transpired during the academic freedom rally at Tanjung Malim’s Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) on late Saturday, Bernama Online reported.
Students and their organisations have accused the police of brutality, with one student hospitalised, while police have claimed they were only doing their job after the students failed to disperse.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said today their investigation paper prepared with Bukit Aman’s input will be passed to the public prosecutor’s office for further action.
He said students’ and policemen have recorded their separate statements.
Mohd Shukri was present during the handover exercise at Batu Gajah police district, with ACP Shaharon Anuar Abdul Latif taking over from retiring Supt Ahmad Nordin Jaafar as police chief.
Responding on blog and postal postings questioning police action, Mohd Shukri said police were monitoring anyone tarnishing their image.
He maintained that police video recording shows no force was used on the crowd, adding that police knowing that they were dealing with students did not bring weapons.
He says if any student said they were injured by the police, then they are making false accusations.
Mohd Shukri added that police know that any injury was sustained by the students crashing into a clinic, apparently to get medicine.
During the incident, 17 undergraduates, including a woman, were detained for participating in an unlawful gathering by student group Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM).
