PM Najib Launches 1Malaysia LPG Cylinder

PUTRAJAYA, 21 MARCH, 2012: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today launched the 1Malaysia LPG Cylinder or SL1M -- a composite LPG cylinder developed by Faidhi Holdings Sdn Bhd.

At the ceremony here, the prime minister called on oil companies to switch their existing steel LPG cylinders to the lighter, cheaper, and user and environment-friendly composite cylinder.

"This will support this very innovative product that can be used locally and has good potential for exports to the region and world market," he told reporters.

In a speech earlier, Najib said his presence at the ceremony was to show the government's full support to innovative products developed by locals.

"I came because I'm interested in local innovation especially when it's realized by local people who are creative and willing to take risks to lead a new way to come out with innovative products that have potential to capture domestic and foreign markets," he said.

He said an innovation should be multinational, multisectoral and multidisciplinary in line with the aspirations of the National Innovation Policy.

In a separate press conference, Faidhi Holdings President Abu Talib Abu said the use of SL1M would lead to saving up to RM7.3 billion in terms maintenance, recycling and repainting costs based on the expected 20 million users in the next 20 years.

He said a small-scale factory with an initial production capacity of 50,000 cylinders monthly was expected to start operation for the Klang Valley market early next year.

He said the SL1M prototype had passed quality and safety tests at the Advance Materials Research Centre and obtained SIRIM certification.

The next step would be to build the factory costing between RM25 million and RM30 million, he said.

The company would seek assistance from Korean technology experts to build the factory in Kuala Langat, he said.

He said Faidhi Holdings' 20.23-hectare land would house the factory. The company also plans to have its suppliers located in the same area.

SL1M is 100 percent explosion proof and comes with a certificate and smart card to make it detectable anywhere in the world.

Abu Talib said that presently, only three companies make composite LPG cylinders. They are in Norway, Sweden dan the Czech Republic.
