Outgoing Women, Family and Community Development minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil should defend herself against the allegations involving her and her family in the National Feedlot Corporation scandal, said PAS's Muslimat deputy leader, Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud.
“She is resigning due to pressure. If she believes she is innocent and has nothing to do with National Feedlot Corporation (NFC)’s fund abuse, then defend.
"If I were her, I would defend myself. If I am innocent, I won’t allow people to say I am guilty,” said the Kota Raja member of parliament at the opening of the fifth, and possibly the final, parliamentary session.
Shahrizat announced she would quit cabinet when her senatorship expires on April 8. A day after her announcement, her husband Mohamad Salleh, the NFC executive chairman, was charged on criminal breach of trust and violation of Companies Act.
Earlier, UMNO leaders hailed Shahrizat's move to leave the cabinet. Its president Najib Razak and his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin, both involved in awarding the National Feedlot Centre's RM250 million project to Shahrizat’s family, described the act as a ‘major sacrifice’ by the former Lembah Pantai MP.
But according to Siti Mariah, Shahrizat had yet to defend herself against the allegations.
“I sympathise with Shahrizat when allegations of her involvement were not disputed with solid evidences, and these have now remained as allegations with no chance for her to defend herself,” said Siti Mariah.
She added that Shahrizat's fate should serve as a lesson to those holding public positions.
