PAS has urged the government to stop approving Malaysian citizenship until the conclusion of the 13th general election.
Vice president Mahfuz Omar pointed out that foreigners had often been manipulated by certain quarters so that they were made citizens and given voting rights.
Mahfuz said based on information received by the party, there is fear that election results could be manipulated.
"We strongly believe the giving of citizenship will affect the polls,” he said.
The Pokok Sena member of parliament reminded the government that only Malaysians would decide their government and not foreigners who were made instant citizens under suspicious circumstances.
“Let the people decide which party they like,” he added.
Mahfuz also expressed concern over the 6P amnesty programme to legalise workers and illegal immigrants, which has been marred by several delays.
“We are afraid over a million foreigners joining this programme will be manipulated. So we demand that any form of citizenship approval be suspended until the 13th general election is over,” he said.
The 6P program initiated by Home Ministry aims to have 1.3 million illegal immigrants to be legalised in order for them to fill up job vacancies in sectors shunned by Malaysians.
