Awang Adek’s 'cosy' links with businessperson queried
An opposition lawmaker has called on the Deputy Finance Minister, Senator Awang Adek Hussin, to explain his relationship with a businessperson whom he alleged have obtained a contract to print the RM2 note when the senator was still the assistant Bank Negara governor in the 1990s.
Machang MP Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (right) said the deputy finance minister must explain his alleged cozy relationship with that person whom he claimed had also paid for monthly installments of RM2,122 for a Honda Civic allegedly belonging to Awang Adek’s wife.
“PKR suspects something amiss with the deputy minister’s ties with that person who owns several companies following several questionable transactions between the two. Awang Adek allegedly has ties with one of the companies owned by the person who got the contract from Bank Negara to print the notes.
“There are other suspicious transactions between the two as there are also allegations that the person had paid for Awang Adek’s trip to Tokyo between June 28, 1999 and July 1, 1999,” said the Machang MP.
Saifuddin added that there are further allegations between Awang Adek with the person, where the deputy minister had allegedly sold his Damansara house to a company owned by the person.
He said such dubious transactions resulted in questions being posed over Awang Adek’s ties with the person.
The Machang MP has given Awang Adek a three-week ultimatum to respond to the allegations made against him, either to admit or deny that there is a special relationship.
Saifuddin threaten to reveal further evidence after Awang Adek has responded.
The deputy minister had earlier challenged the Kelantan government by giving it three weeks to investigate alleged irregularities in the gold dinar issue.
Malaysiakini has tried to contact Awang Adek and is awaiting his response.
