Don't dwell on the past, Soi Lek tells Chinese youth

MCA president Chua Soi Lek today said the Chinese community should not dwell in the past and be upset over past decisions made by previous governments.

"Don't dwell on what happened in the 60s and 70s, today is the 21st century, It is not right to dwell on past decisions, we have a new way of doing things and we should move forward as long as are on the right path," he told some 2,000 Chinese youths in a dialogue at Universiti Malaya this afternoon.

Chua was responding to a question from the floor over the problems plaguing Chinese schools in the country.

NONEHe said that funding for Chinese schools has been at its peak since Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak (right) took the helm of the government.

Chua added that even though graduates from Chinese independent schools still could not be admitted to public varsities as their syllabus is inconsistent with the national syllabus, their situation has also improved under the premier's leadership.

"Chinese independent school graduates can now apply to the Higher Education Loan Fund (PTPTN)," he said.
Chua grilled by youths

Earlier, Chua also faced several questions that were critical of the MCA, with one student demanding the party's make clear its stance over the controversial Lynas Advanced Material Plant (Lamp) in Gebeng, Pahang.

"I don't want to know whether the plant is safe or not, I want to know whether MCA supports the project or otherwise so we can decide on how to vote," asked a student.
To this, Chua urged the Chinese community to respond with calm.

"I'm not saying that there's nothing wrong with Lynas, but many experts including the opposition's Hulu Langat MP Che Rosli Che Mat has said that it is not radioactive.

"The criticisms is as if Lynas is a nuclear plant, that is not true, our stand remains the same that all waste that has radiation must be shipped overseas," he said.
Chua was also quizzed on the Port Klang Free Zone scandal but he refused comment.

"You (MCA) has done many projects but how do we know that it is like the Port Klang Free Trade Zone (PKFZ) scandal where left hand goes to right hand and then we don't know what happens," said the youth.

The unidentified youth was obviously taking a jab at Chua's infamous "left hand to right hand" remark made when defending his deputy Liow Tiong Lai's attempt to secure the WWW15 vehicle number plate.

"This case is still in court so I do not want to comment much but the fact so many people have been charged in court is evidence that the government is committed towards eradicating corruption," Chua responded.
