Former Selangor MB Mohd Khir Toyo’s allegations that MB Khalid Ibrahim has absolute control over approval of projects under the Geran Selangorku is an insult to the state’s civil service, said the Selangor government.
“Not a single infrastructure project is decided by the menteri besar, on the contrary they are approved by the committee comprising the state’s highest officers,” said the MB’s political secretary Faekah Husin (left).
“Is Khir denying the ability and expertise of government officials in making decisions about prioritising projects?” she said in a statement today.
She was responding to Khir’s “malicious” allegations that Khalid was using his power over the project approvals to shore up his political position.
Hitting back at the former MB, who was sentenced to a year’s jaillast December for corruption, Faekah said Khir should be “ashamed” that the Geran Selangorku funds were made possible by recovering state debts, something she said the former MB had not been able to achieve.
“The Geran Selangorku is the product of the Pakatan Rakyat government’s capabilities in collecting the obsolete debts that Khir had deliberately forgotten while he was in charge, for reasons only he and his administration are aware..
“It is only after we have succeeded in collecting the debts in order to return the funds to the people ... that Khir suddenly wants to put a word in,” she said.

'Cronyism buried with Umno'
Faekah explained that the process for awarding the projects under the grant went through an open tender process and was administered via an implementation coordination unit (ICU) “just like at federal level”.
She added that the grant has, for example allowed the state to revive the Road Gang project at local government level to fastrack road repairs.
“The Road Gang project under the local authorities (PBT) had long lapsed after the BN government privatised all the road repair projects,” she said.
“We understand there are many who resent that the Geran Selangorku is being administered in a transparent and orderly manner, thereby plugging out those who want to make an easy living by being middlemen.
“Every project now is being awarded transparently to contractors, without the need for lobbyists,” she said.
“This differs from Khir’s (above, in white) era, when projects were awarded directly to family members, in-laws, relatives and cronies.
“Principles of transparency and responsibility were totally absent, there was only the principle of enriching oneself and (one’s relatives).
“This shameful practice has today been buried, along with Umno,” she quipped.
