DAP Sabah Complaints Bureau received a distress call from a villager who is residing in Kampung, Papar (Jalan Papar Lama). The complainant who wishes to be unknown says that there is an illegal sand dredging activity taking place in the area. This has been going on for years now.
He and other villagers staying near by had brought this matter up numerous times to the Papar Council. They had taken no action until today. The villagers did bring this matter up to their respective elected representative as well and yet neither respond nor action taken. The villagers are very frustrated and disappointed that their elected representative does nothing but just talk.
The villagers are worried that landslides might occur at any time. The villager who is only leaving less than 80 meters away from the river says that these illegal activity my effect their area. It' curving in day by day. To make things worse, there is a school near by where there are 190 students.
The question is what is taking the council so long to react on this matter? Isn't this a serious offence? If the sand dredging operators is carrying out these activity legally, why isn't there any official council permit number on display? If it's legal, there should also be proper guidelines drawn out for these operators. Must there be an accident or lost of lifes before we take safety mesures.
DAP Sabah urge all relevant authorities to look into this matter seriously and to make sure that these villagers are taken care off. - Sabahkini
This problem should be investigated.
