KUALA NERANG -- The opposition always comes up with statements to confuse the people to deny the good done by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.
He referred to a recent statement by PAS spiritual leader and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat on heaven for those who voted for PAS, while those who voted for Umno would go to hell when the matter could only be determined by God.
Referring to the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M), he said, PAS issued an edict (fatwa) that it was corruption, but the party members took it.
"If it is corruption, don't accept," he said at a 1Malaysia People's Feast at the Padang Awam Felda Lubok Merbau, near here today.
Muhyiddin said that in Kedah, which is under the opposition, BR1M was given to 363,132 households, involving RM181 million.
"When we give, we did not ask the recipients whether they support Umno, PAS or DAP," he added.
On the Orange Book, he said it contained the opposition's promises should they win Putrajaya, adding that the promises, if implemented, could make the country go bankrupt.
"What we did was to carry out transformation. We have done a lot of things. For the past two years, the various agencies and ministries have achieved the targeted objectives," he added.
On making Malaysia a high income developed country by 2020, the deputy prime minister said the BN government would work to realise it.
"We have a population of 28 million with a per capita income of US$9,500. In 2020, we want the per capita income to be at US$15,000. This is a promise by the government.
"We know how to achieve it and how to increase the people's income. As a credible government, we will fulfill it, not like the people on the other side," he added.
Muhyiddin said the BN's dismal performance in the 2008 general election gave the people an opportunity to compare the BN government with the opposition government.
"After four years of PAS' rule in Kedah, what have the people obtained. Where are the benefits promised by the state government? Where are the funds? Where is the free water supply?," he added.
He said the important thing now was for the people to continue to believe in efforts made by the BN government and to win back Kedah.
Muhyiddin said that in his visits to states under the opposition, he could feel the wind of change among the people who wanted the general election to be held soon as they wanted BN to be back in power.
At the function, Muhyiddin approved an allocation of RM1 million to build a hall for Sekolah Menengah Lubok Merbau.
