Anwar faulted for Yen Yen's Aussie PR

MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek said Anwar Ibrahim’s tenure as education minister played a role in MCA vice-president Dr Ng Yen Yen’s decision to seek permanent residency in Australia 17 years ago.

NONEAt a press conference today, Chua said Anwar’s policies had made it difficult for the non-bumiputera to enter universities locally.

“She did this because when Anwar was education minister during this time. It was very restrictive to the non-bumiputera.

“A lot of non-bumiputera could not get into university when Anwar was education minister.

“You are lucky that you were born later, when Anwar was not around. I went through that system, so I know what it is like,” he said.

Chua said Ng’s decision to seek permanent residency in Australia was justified because it was for the sake of her children’s education.

NONE“She has said it very clearly – In this country, many people applied for PR status for the sake of education”, he said.

Yesterday, without any prodding from reporters, Ngdefended her decision to apply for permanent residency in the 1990s and renouncing it in 1995 when her son graduated from law school.

Ng, who was a member of the Dewan Negara when she was a permanent resident in Australia, said she was responding to Lim’s veiled swipes during his public debate with Chua on Sunday.

Chua said he did not speak out against Ng 17 years ago because he was “a nobody” at the time.

“This question should be placed in a historical perspective. Do you know what year it was? It was 1993. I was nobody. What is past is past. I think she should not repeat it,” he said.
