‘Fong’s either incompetent or a liar’

Petaling Jaya MP Tony Pua says that the two companies which bid for the resalable alternative energy scheme had a paid up capital of just RM100 each.
PETALING JAYA: Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) chairman Fong Chan Onn is either incompetent or a liar, said DAP publicity chief Tony Pua.
Pua was responding to Fong’s explanation on how Suzi Suliana Sidek got a lion’s share of the newly introduced resalable alternative energy scheme.
Suzi Suliana is the daughter of former Chief Secretary to the government, Mohd Sidek Hassan.
Two days ago, Pua disclosed that Suzi controlled more than 32% or about 45 mega-watt (MW) from the quota set for solar energy, via the Feed-In Tariff (FiT) mechanism – far above the limit of 1MW-5W set for companies.
Under the FiT programme, power generated from renewable energy is to be sold through SEDA, and later resold to consumers by Tenaga Nasional Bhd at a subsidised price.
English daily The Star reported Fong as saying that the selection was above board and “the companies had met all the necessary technical criteria as well as financial commitments”.
Pua however revealed today that all the companies awarded the combined total of 45.9MW of solar generated electricity were set up only weeks before the Dec 2, 2011 application deadline.
“At least eight out of the 12 of companies who were successful in their bids were set up only in November 2011.
“In fact, two of them, Synergy Must Sdn Bhd and Trinity Creations Sdn Bhd – had only RM100 in paid-up capital each,” said Pua who is also the Petaling Jaya Utara MP.
He reminded Seda, which comes under the purview of the Energy, Water and Green Technology Ministry, that the Renewable Energy Act 2011 was enacted to ensure fair competition and transparency in the implementation of the (Fit) system.
“But the complete opposite is seen here where companies set up by top government officials’ kin secured the largest chunk of the lucrative solar energy supply quota,” said Pua.
He urged Seda to re-open the bidding for solar energy quota to ensure all bidders are fairly treated in the process.
“Let those not qualified be knocked off from the exercise as well,” said Pua.
