IGP: Police didn't use EO willy-nilly

Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar has denied that police had used provisions of the Emergency Ordinance (EO) to nab people without sufficient evidence.

NONEResponding to a remark by the prime minister on Monday, Ismail said the police have always ensured that there are justifications for every arrest.

"We (work) based on the law and the system of the country...If we want to arrest anyone, there must be justifications. That remains the same (even without the EO)," he told reporters today.

He also urged all to "not speculate" that crime is on the rise following the lifting of the EO.

"It (the situation) is not out of control," he said.
He also said that the police is ready to face the challenge of operating without the preventive EO.

“If there are still old ways which we can use then we will utilise it. We will think of ways to face this challenge,” he said.

Najib Abdul Razak had noted said that the police will have to work harder now to gather evidence to back an arrest, as they can no longer use the EO to nab anyone they think is "bad".
Najib in the same speech also said that the ISA was abolished because it did not "benefit (the government) politically".

The EO repeal was named as the reason for a hike in crime rates in Selangor by the state’s deputy chief police A Thaiveegan.

‘Expect crime rates to tumble’

Meanwhile, the IGP said that he expects crime rates to continue to tumble with continued police efforts.

“I am certain we are able to get positive results in the months to come,” he said.

He added that the police are also encouraged by findings by observers from Singapore, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and the United States who were part of of the international review panel team who visited recently.

“They looked at PDRM’s plans to reduce crime and they said we are on the right track,” he said.
