PKR Sabah Secretary, Dr Roland Chia expressed mixed feelings over the preferential treatment in developing markets in Kota Kinabalu and Penampang.
Whilst the Kota Kinabalu Central market was given major facelifts, the 88 Market Place in Kapayan and the Penampang Donggongon Wet Market has yet to see any news on their completion and operational date. Many potential hawkers are deprived in operating due to this prolonged situation in addition to the potential economic downturn that has already begun globally.
Dr Roland Chia was highlighting this when visiting the abandoned market project in 88 Market Place. We need to have more markets to cater for the fast growing population of Kota Kinabalu and Penampang.
Kota Kinabalu proper has a population of 452,058 while the larger urban area which includes Penampang district has an estimated population of 651,658. It is the largest urban centre in Borneo and the sixth largest in Malaysia.
As compared to zero progress on the Kapayan 88 Market Place Market and the Penampang DonggongonWet market, the upgrading works at the Central Market food court is almost completed and an additional grant given by the State Government of RM500,000 enabling the city hall to carry out the upgrading works on the food court area involving 96 food stalls and also the second phase, on the food court catering to both Muslims and non-Muslims involving 36 lots, located near the Segama overhead bridge was completed in May this year.
Dr Roland Chia urged the authorities to have Kapayan 88 Market Place and Penampang Donggongon Wet Market solved immediately. - Sabahkini
